Frank Dulin: the consummate volunteer

According to Frank Dulin, the Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic is the best thing that happened to West Chester. That’s why he has been the Volunteer Coordinator for the iconic pro bike race since it started 14 years ago, when he and a small group of riding buddies formed the West Chester Cycling Club, which was instrumental in bringing pro bike racing to West Chester.

Returning on August 11, The Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic will once again become a summer highlight for thousands of visitors. And each year, as the race grows in popularity, the importance of Dulin’s job becomes more critical. “More visitors and more riders mean we need more volunteers,” says Dulin. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great problem to have, but I’m always looking for more people to help. This year, especially,” he emphasized.

“It’s the longest running pro bike racing event in the area, and since becoming part of the USA CRITS Series, we get a lot of top riders coming here to compete,” says Dulin. “And the Rothman Institute Amateur Criterium gives riders at all levels of experience the opportunity to compete, too.”

Dulin was raised in Philadelphia and moved to the West Chester area at the age of 11. “My father was a carpenter, and mom had her hands full raising us kids – there were seven of us. I went into the Navy right out of high school and served in Viet Nam until my enlistment was up in 1965. Then I became a computer technician for a company that eventually became Unisys, Inc., a position I held until 1989.”

After a stint at being a sky bum, he started riding a bike, and the rest is history. “I didn’t start riding until I turned 50. When I started cycling, I weighed 255 pounds. Now I weigh 195.” He also appreciates the social aspect of cycling. “Over the years I’ve made a lot of friends through the biking community, which represents about 65% of the total number of volunteers I enlist every year.” It can be said that when you’re a friend of Frank, you’ll be a volunteer for life.

He also has a rather demanding Australian Shepard named Annie, who forces Dulin to take daily walks that his Strava friends can track on a daily basis. (Strava friends take note: be sure to follow Frank on race day to see how far he walks.)

But right now, what’s high on Frank’s agenda is the bike race and filling in all the positions necessary to make it successful. “Believe me, there’s something for everyone. Set-up, take-down, registration, and marshaling to name a few. All volunteers will receive a special commemorative T-shirt and vouchers for meals.

“Events like the bike race make West Chester such an appealing place to live and work,” says Dulin. “It really adds to the flavor of the town.”
