The Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce is reimagining what the holidays mean this year by launching the first-ever Chester County Hospital Lights Up Holiday Weekends in West Chester. Transformed into a winter wonderland, the streets of historic West Chester are bathed in the glow of thousands of holiday lights every evening from November 26 to January 1. Each weekend features holiday festivities, shopping and dining, title sponsored by Chester County Hospital. “We are thrilled to draw visitors from throughout the region to enjoy our businesses, culture and people in downtown West Chester. We know everyone is eager to support local business during this time,” says Michael J. Duncan, President & CEO, Chester County Hospital. “We look forward to sharing the festivities with our friends, families and neighbors this holiday season!”

Friday, November 26 – Sunday, November 28, 2021: Historic West Chester transforms into a magical wonderland, under the glow of thousands of twinkling lights, as your family enjoys festivities every weekend throughout the holiday season! Chester County Hospital Lights Up Holiday Weekends in West Chester kicks off with free parking all weekend as the lights turn on for the first time during Shop Small Business Weekend. Discover the one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants that make West Chester such a vibrant community!

  • FREE PARKING, roaming carolers (courtesy of our friends at the West Chester Downtown Foundation), free hot chocolate and coffee, and the kick-off of the Professional Gingerbread House Competition, sponsored by Delphi Wealth Management, at select locations
  • Sat. at 2 p.m. – Making Spirits Bright Holiday Music Series outside the Historic Chester County Courthouse (2 N. High St.)

  • Sat. at 3 p.m. – Santa is Coming! Wave to Santa as he tours the borough on a fire truck!

Friday, December 3 – Sunday, December 5, 2021: Stroll through thousands of twinkling lights as Chester County Hospital Lights Up Holiday Weekends in West Chester continues with an Old-Fashioned Holiday Weekend! West Chester is decked out for the borough’s beloved Tree Lighting Ceremony, followed by a fabulous holiday bazaar, breakfast with Santa and more!

  • Roaming carolers, free hot chocolate and coffee at select locations.
  • Fri. EveningTree Lighting Ceremony at the Historic Chester County Courthouse (2 N. High St.) including live music. Keep an eye out for the big guy in a red suit, as well as iconic images from holidays past projected on borough buildings. This is also First Friday in the borough and stores will be open late. There will also be FREE street-level parking
  • Sat. MorningBreakfast with Santa at the History Center ($15, advance tickets required at https://westchesterpa.myrec.com/)
  • Sat. at 10 a.m – 12:30 – Little Lincolns Gettysburg Address Competition at the Historic Courthouse Steps. Middle school students from across the county put on their best Lincoln attire and recite the Gettysburg Address. The purpose of this event is to encourage youth, their families, and their friends to become more involved in the community, and to appreciate local history. The Chester County Community Foundation has been putting the event on for over a decade and it’s a big hit in the community. More information HERE.

First Responders and Health Care Heroes Weekend

Friday, December 10 – Sunday, December 12, 2021: Historic West Chester glows with thousands of twinkling lights as you enjoy unforgettable shopping, dining and holiday entertainment during Chester County Hospital Lights Up Holiday Weekends in West Chester. During this special First Responders and Health Care Heroes Weekend and throughout the season, 100% of QR code donations will be donated to local fire departments, police departments, EMS and health care workers.

  • Enjoy roaming carolers, free hot chocolate and coffee at select locations.
  • Fri. EveningHolidays Around the World. Explore how different cultures celebrate the holidays. Light refreshments provided at Oscar Lasko YMCA (1 E. Chestnut St.). Registration is required and there are 3 time slots available:
  • Sat. at 2 p.m. – Making Spirits Bright Holiday Music Series outside the Historic Chester County Courthouse (2 N. High St.)
    • Fugett Middle School Chorale
    • Malvern Men’s Chorus/Notre Dame Women’s Chorale
  • Sat. at 3 p.m.Santa is Coming! Wave to Santa as he tours the borough on a fire truck!
  • Sun. 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Touch a Truck. Meet the firefighters, get hands-on with a firetruck, and sign a thank-you banner to let these local heroes know how much we appreciate their service!

‘Twas the Weekend Before Christmas

Friday, December 17 – Sunday, December 19, 2021‘Twas the Weekend Before Christmas, and all through the borough, West Chester’s elves make your winter fun thorough! Chester County Hospital Lights Up Holiday Weekends in West Chester has activities for the whole family to make your spirits bright.

  • Roaming carolers, free hot chocolate and coffee at select locations.
  • Fri. Evening – Devote yourself to last-minute shopping (and celebrating!) at our one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants.
  • Fri. Evening – 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Parents Night Out: Drop the kids off at Oscar Lasko YMCA (1 E. Chestnut St.), where they’ll play while you get some holiday shopping done! Registration is required and there is a fee.  This is open for children ages 4-12.  Register HERE.
  • Sat. 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.FREE Cookie Decorating for Kids and more family fun at Oscar Lasko YMCA (1 E. Chestnut St.). Come to the Oscar Lasko YMCA to decorate a cookie with icing and sprinkles and enjoy other fun activities at the Y! Cookies are being provided by John Serock Catering. Masks are required for this event and attendees must pre-register for a time slot. Registration links are forthcoming.

New Year’s Weekend

Friday, December 31, 2021 – Saturday, January 1, 2022: Celebrate New Year’s Weekend with your final chance to enjoy the thousands of twinkling lights that have transformed West Chester this holiday season! Chester County Hospital Lights Up Holiday Weekends in West Chester concludes with your final “glowing” stroll with family, friends and neighbors through the borough’s historic streets, all while visiting the shops and restaurants that give the borough its unique charm.

Professional Gingerbread House Competition

November 26 – January 5, 2022: Come stroll the borough and vote on social media for your favorite professionally designed gingerbread house! Each house, displayed at select locations, will be designed to celebrate the holidays with a nod to West Chester! This contest is being sponsored by Delphi Wealth Management. The following local bakeries and culinary artist will be featured:

 

Holiday Window Decorating Contest

Begins November 20, 2021, winners announced on Monday, December 13, 2021: Hosted by the West Chester Business Improvement District, businesses within the BID are invited to decorate their window or storefront for the holidays. Businesses that participate will be judged by members of the Public Art’s Commission (PAC). There will be three categories of windows – small, medium and large windows. Each winner in a category will receive $250. More information to participate can be found HERE.


Parking & Map

During the first weekend only, November 26-28, all public parking is free in the borough of West Chester. Parking options are shown below, surrounding the prime holiday light locations on Gay Street (Matlack to Darlington), Market Street (Matlack to Darlington) and High Street (Miner to Chestnut). During the night of December 3 only, expect a road closure for the Tree Lighting Ceremony on High Street (Gay to Market).
